In America and Canada, there are over 100 manufacturers of the iconic American Recreational Vehicle (RV).  In the UK, a handful of American RV dealers supply approximately 12 -15 different RV brand names such as Winnebago and Damon, that have been professionally converted (e.g. electric converted) to be safe to drive legally on UK and European roads.

The range of RV varies from the large “A Class” (usually constructed on a lorry or bus chassis, looking similar to a coach with living accommodation) through to the coach built “Class C” motorhome (with the “over cab” profile on a cut away chassis).

Currently, the biggest American RV that you can legally drive in Great Britain must not be more than 12 metres in length (just over 39 feet) and 2.55 metres wide (just over 8 feet). The length and width don’t take account of driving mirrors. There is no height limit, albeit there needs to be a notice visible to the driver e.g. when encountering low bridges.

The average European coachbuilt motorhome has a height of 2.8 metres, whereas the majority of American RV motorhomes are over 3.5 metres in height. (* 1 metre = 3.28 feet)
