Top caravan and camping sites in Wales 

UPDATE 22/09: Due to the recent rise in coronavirus cases, there are multiple local lockdowns being put in place by local authorities. Travelling is not banned, but it is not recommended at this time. If you are planning on travelling, you must check whether the area you intend on visiting is accepting visitors, and ensure you adhere to safety measures. Remember to wear your mask, wash your hands and stay a safe distance from other people. “We’re good to go”. This is the message from the Welsh government, opening up the possibility of a much-needed getaway to some of the UK’s most beautiful camping and caravanning destinations.  This year especially, most of us are looking for tranquillity, hidden gems, and maybe a little adventure along the way. And whether you’re into exploring the uplands by foot or bike, peaceful coves or unspoilt beaches, Wales has all the ingredients for a rewarding, Covid-safe holiday.  So where should you pitch up? What’s open and when? Here are our suggestions for caravan and camping sites in Wales for 2020. 

Can I go to Wales for a holiday? 

Yes. The rules were eased on 6 July, lifting the requirement to stay local and allowing travel for all purposes, including tourism. This enabled travel both into and around Wales.  From 11 July, self-contained holiday accommodation is open. This includes parks and sites for motorhomes and caravans, where each unit has its own supply of water for WC, showering and cooking purposes.   From 25 July, and pending any further developments, camping and caravanning sites in Wales with shared facilities are allowed to reopen. However, sites will need to adhere to extra health and safety rules and undergo thorough risk assessments. In response to this, lots of sites are reopening, but you may find that many are offering fewer facilities than usual. This is especially the case for smaller sites where safe cleaning protocols and the policing of social distancing would involve a huge burden on staff.  Check with the individual campsite what facilities they are offering before you book. Tip: the campsite’s Facebook feed is usually best for this, as the park’s website may not yet have been updated.  Our top Welsh destinations 

Fforest Fields

[caption id="attachment_5155" align="alignnone" width="300"] Image used courtesy of Fforest Fields[/caption] nr Builth Wells, Mid Wales Website  Nestled in the hills of mid Wales, Fforest Fields is ideally located for exploring the Elan valley, and also makes a handy stopover en route to Snowdonia. Chilled, super-friendly and great for families, the site is adjacent to a 500-acre farm. Here, you’ll find two lakes, one for fishing and the other one for boating and kayaking. There’s also a ‘spooky wood’, along with dozens of nearby walking trails for all abilities.  Fforest Fields is taking self-contained units only (caravans and motorhomes) until the end of July. From August, it anticipates being able to open up its facilities — including shower block, washrooms, laundrette — and to be able to take tents again.

Three Cliffs Bay 

Swansea Bay, Glamorgan Website  For family holidays, weekend getaways, water sports and more, Swansea Bay has something for everyone. Three Cliffs Bay beach is one of its star attractions: a wonderful shoreline of sand dunes, salt marsh and limestone cliffs.  The Three Cliffs Bay site is just a short walk to the golden sands. As well as offering glamping and cottage options, this dog-friendly site also welcomes tents, caravans, campervans and motorhomes.  Highlights include a fully refurbished modern amenity block, sea views - and you’re right on the Wales Coastal Path.  Self-contained caravans and motorhomes can book from 11 July. Glamping, tents and smaller camper vans will be opened up from 25 July. 

Celtic Camping 

St Davids Pembrokeshire Website  With its quaint mediaeval streets, pretty St Davids is the UK’s smallest city and is a fantastic base for exploring the Pembrokeshire coastline.  A few miles from the city and set in 250 acres of open farm land, you’ll find Celtic Camping, which offers a totally relaxed experience, knockout ocean views and direct access to the 186-mile Pembrokeshire Coastal Path. The site accommodates tents, tourers, camper vans and motorhomes. It also welcomes larger groups, making this a great option for extended family holidays, work teams and clubs (socially distanced of course!). Shared facilities at this site look set to be opened up from 25 July. 

Hendre Mynach 

Barmouth, Snowdonia Website  Barmouth is one of Snowdonia’s best-loved seaside resorts, offering breathtaking views of Cardigan Bay and a picturesque harbour to explore. Hendre Mynach Touring Caravan and Camping Park is just 100 metres away from Barmouth’s Blue Flag sandy beach, which offers plenty of space for the family to play, sunbathe and swim.  Static caravan rental, pods and a holiday rental house are all available, along with spacious pitches for caravans and motorhomes. Facilities-wise, Hendre Mynach usually offers all the facilities you would expect from a 5-star site, including modern shower & toilet blocks, launderette and washing up facilities. However, the site is proceeding on a phased reopening basis, so check which facilities are available before you book. 

Daisy Bank 

Montgomery, Powys Website If serenity is what you’re aiming for, Daisy Bank should fit the bill. It’s set in seven acres of beautiful countryside between Bishops Castle in Shropshire and Welshpool in Powys, within easy reach of the March Towns and the heather-clad Shropshire Hills.  This is an adult-only site, and all guests and visitors on-site must be 18 years of age. Along with camping pods and static lodges, it has a range of fully serviced pitches over four separate areas. The site is currently open for self-contained tourers and pods. It may be able to open up other facilities from 25 July (heated shower/toilet buildings, a small shop, pitch and putt), and visitors are advised to contact the site directly to see what’s available. 

Riverside 

Betws-y-Coed, Snowdonia Website Riverside Touring Park is surrounded by hills and nestled beside the river, five minutes walk to the lovely little village of Betws-y-Coed. From here, you’re ideally placed to explore the lakes and mountains of Snowdonia.  This five-star, eight-acre park provides pitches for touring caravans, motorhomes and a small number of tents. Usual facilities include a shop, heated toilet and shower block, dishwashing and baby changing rooms. Shared facilities are scheduled to open up on 25 July.
