Winter Driving Tips: Pre-Journey Planning

Posted on Dec 18, 2018

As we know all too well, Winter weather can be particularly hazardous and in some cases, highly dangerous. To prepare you for the season ahead, our affinity partner GEM Motoring Assist have put together some journey planning tips. Pre-journey planning is essential before you hit the road. Be sure to ask yourself the following questions before you embark: Is my journey absolutely necessary? If bad weather is forecast, only travel on the road if you have absolutely have to. This especially applies to driving through rural areas. What conditions can I expect? Always check the Met Office website for the latest weather forecasts, predictions and warnings. Also make sure you listen to radio broadcasts for local weather information. What's my route? Be sure to thoroughly research your route as there may be incidents that will affect your journey. Google Maps is an example of a comprehensive route planner. What do I need to pack? It's always best to be cautious when you travel, so try to bring your breakdown membership details, mobile phone and charger, a first aid kit, ice scraper and de-icer, a torch with extra batteries, some bottled water and cash. For longer/rural journeys bring spare clothes and blankets, some food, jump leads, a small shovel, any important medication and a road map. This piece of advice was brought to you in association with our affinity partner GEM Motoring Assist. GEM offers fully comprehensive UK breakdown cover, so whether you breakdown at home or at the roadside you can rest assured they will come to your rescue.
