Take care with heating during winter

29th December 2010

People have been reminded to be safety conscious when heating their caravans this winter.

Touring caravan insurance customers have been advised to take care this winter when heating their vehicles.

This is following a blaze that occurred in a caravan in Somerset, the Western Gazette reports.

It is thought hot embers from a wood-burning stove caused a fire to break out after they fell onto the floor.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service urged individuals to ensure they are safety conscious when attempting to keep warm.

People were reminded to keep portable heaters away from curtains and furniture and that they should not be used for drying clothing.

In addition, electric blankets should be switched off before going to sleep and hot water bottles must not be used in the same bed, it stated.

Finally, people were reminded about the dangers of candles and the importance of ensuring they are extinguished when leaving a room.

For extra safety, caravan owners may wish to invest in a smoke alarm specifically designed for use in such a vehicle.
