Imports - Food for Thought?
One thing we haven’t mentioned is the fact some caravans are imported into the UK. Buying an imported model in some cases comes with a little more thought.
Names such as Adria have been in the UK for 40 years but some brands have come and gone then arrived back again! Do be aware that some are not made to UK spec (i.e. entrance door on opposite side) plus ovens and grills may not be fitted either. Also find out where your nearest dealership is, because imported makes don’t have the coverage of the UK brands. Parts can be more difficult to obtain and wait times longer than UK brands. Imported tourers can offer very good value but with the Euro rates at present prices make them appear expensive compared to UK equivalents.
We have looked at buying off the peg tourers, but if you’re in the market to buying a more lavish model then it’s a case of going direct to the manufacturer. Vanmaster have over 15 years of luxury bespoke caravan building behind them. They can offer a very personal service to customers.
Easy to Tow, Easy to Stow
To add to the further vast array of tourers some users require a caravan that actually folds away on towing/storage. Yet on site offers a perfectly practical tourer with the facilities of a rigid conventional built unit. Only one UK maker offers the folding caravan now - Gobur. Their caravans are available in various specifications and sizes from two berths to four. While pop-top tourers such as the imported Going Cockpit, Eriba and Silver by Trigano offers more choices for this niche new caravan market. However in most cases these brands dictate that you buy from a single outlet so you may need to travel a long distance for repairs/services.
Get it Right
Buying a new caravan is a big decision and on my travels I do find nearly new caravans that have been traded back in – sometimes within just a few months because the buyers didn’t take time to decide on the caravan that they needed for their use. Choose right first time and you can’t go far wrong. Make sure that your new caravan is well protected with anti-theft devices as well as getting the right caravan insurance.
Caravan theft is still a major problem so it’s essential that you cover the caravan properly. Shield offers a very comprehensive caravan insurance and also make sure that you cost the van’s contents and equipment accordingly so that in the event of theft you’re not left out of pocket.
Whatever caravan you buy it’s down to you to enjoy its comforts and to give you and your family many hours of pleasure. Make the right choices and you will find that owning a new caravan is a very enjoyable experience and a worthy investment in your leisure time.
